Will be creating a desktop app with uses Shibboleth for account verification. Can that be done using the SAML SSO components and if so, are there any good examples around?

The SAML SSO is a browser based protocol. Most protocol messages are transmitted using HTTP redirects or posts via the browser.
Using a desktop applications means you will have to appear like a browser to the identity provider and service provider web sites.
We don’t have any examples using a desktop application. Our examples are web applications accessed through a browser.
